Finalllll the last blog!! Ypaaaaaaaaa
I am really happy that I finished all my final today, and this may be the last work that I have to finish, is to talk about our final again. That is the last work about performance that I have to do for the whole year. It is really fun as a final project compares with the final exams from other classes. The final play that we did about plot is directly from an Indian movie, the story line was complicated for the audiences to understand. The hard part of the script is it is from a movie, from a totally different culture, and especially the size and length of the play is limited, so that we have to cut a lot of stuff which is hard to make the plot reliable and understandable. That makes our work harder. Even we are allowed to use sounds effects, stage lights, --- even crew members to help us make the production better. But still I feel like it is complicated for other audiences to understand. The last time that we have tried was right on the exam period B at Monday, the first day of our nightmare -- final week. I felt like I did it better than the last time we did rehearsal or failed to recored as the final one. I did not forget any parts of my lines, and I finally remembered all the movements that I have to do from the script, basically with my partner Ben who acted as Jamal, my brother in the play. I feel like I am really getting to become an actor, well not a professional, but at least for fun and entertainment. Because to become an actor with performance skills , the most important part is to be confident, in order to deliver my lines clearly, and make those movements natural. I think I am really getting closer to that situation. Still, I have to be really thankful for the great, rare experience from the work of Spring drama production. That totally changed myself. So, back to the final project. The last time as the final project, there are still a lot of things that I have to be aware, change, correct, and make it better. For an example, most of the actors who are professional have the ability to improvise and overcome the awkward situations. For example, when ourselves forget our lines, or our partners forget their lines, or we went wrong. How to improvise, change the script, and bring it back to the right route? That is really important and needed. I need that ability the most. Because when the person who delivers their lines right before me who may cut a part of their lines, I will be shocked and frozen, or even did not notice that, still "waiting" for that part of the line come out from his / her mouth. And this eventually make the performance into an awkward situation. We are working in a group, so we have to learn how to make a great group work.

My last performance !
As we just finished so many times for performance work, and the whole long year, we finally step into the final project, that last performance that I may do as the last one. It is kind of sad, so I decided to try to make the last one better. Yesterday we just did the first draft videoing the scenes that we had. Well, to be honest, the first draft was not quiet good. I forgot one line of my scripts, and my partner Ben did the same thing as me. The things that I did well I guess was just about the performing skills. Because I have been worked on performance work a lot of times, and that helps for my experience. The most important one, and which I am proud of myself about is I have been worked on the drama comedy tonight in front of the audiences from all school even some of them are from the town of Cheshire. That is the biggest part, it is not about psychical skills because I did not play for some important roles, but I gained and learned a lot. At least, I am no longer scared or shy in front of one hundred audiences. The thing that I did not do well on, or the group did not do well on is the script itself. Because our story is directly from an Indian movie, and the story line is too complicated for the audiences to understand, especially the size and length of the play is limited, so that we have to cut a lot of stuff which is hard to make the plot reliable and understandable. Another thing is that we are not "professional", or not even attend average level for writing scripts. We definitely can not compete with the "student production" scripts that we did for the summer season drama. The another part is that we did a lot of flash backs. Due to students from the same class but different periods, they told me that they had that kind of problem before - made the play more hard to understand or misleading happening. The scenes changing from current time and flash backs are hard to control and make it understandable. Maybe it is because of the black out and custom changing were not projected during the first draft. But still, that is still the most important problems that we are having right now. For me, personally I think I still have to work on my lines delivering, facial expressions and give more impression to the audiences. For most important part, I have to be connected with the emotion from the scenes of scripts. That is also what my English teacher gave me for notes for.For the other groups, I guess who does not have the same problem that we are having right now are fine. Their script are well produced, and their participation are great. I am interested to see more of those group works, that may help us a lot in order to improve our quality.

It is my performance!
There are a lot of blogs that I have written from those two years, and yet so many plays I have been watched. But this time is the most important, significant and exciting time to write down this blog. Because I am no longer commenting this play by audience, I am an actor now! We have come far, from the end of March until now, two months. Time flies by, and I have learned a lot --- even having the feeling like I won't be able to learn more than this time ever in the high school life. The experiences of practicing and participating performance totally changed my life. How amazing it is! I was a quiet nervous person, and I stepped into the door of black box and as a cast member in order to change it. The group working performance is exciting and fun, rehearsal is serious and nervous, but those two performing days are the most nervous time I get ever in my life. When I was acting as Elle's father, I was sitting on the long chair in front of the audiences. Although I am not the important or major characters over all, I still got super nervous. My body was shaking a little bit and I could not stop it. For any reason, that was really the first time I performed on stage in front of about a hundred audiences. My heart was beating so fast! But thanks god, the second scene quiet after it I felt so much more confident and better. Then I continued trying to memorize my lines and get ready for each parts of the scene that I have to act. The scripts are funny, and those students' productions are amazing. Suddenly when I said my lines and audiences were laughing, I calm myself down constantly, then I felt so happy, with full of joy in my heart: It's me, who made audiences laughing! There is nothing more like a glory ever happened in my life. I know I am not that important in the plays, even I do not need to be important, I still can make a change for audiences' feeling. That is my glory!

Who wants to be a millionare
So that was the first week of us doing the final project, and that was kind of hard to go through it, and luckily that we are doing it by a group of three but not alone ( thanks god). The script and idea was quiet tough to write and think of the story line, because it is from an Indian movie, which commonly has messy story lines. And the story is pretty broad too. The whole line is too long for us to put in the limited size for the final project, so the work of cutting line and trying to make the line seem complete is quiet hard, too. The story is about how a "chaiwala" (tea sever) went to a famous tv show "Do you want to be a millionaire" and finally won his million rupees prize. The story is basically about his life with his brother and so many struggles that he went through, which gives him power and experiences to be knowledgable for those tricky questions. The purpose for him to achieve is to find the girl that he loves when they knew each other from young ages. He thought if he won the game in the TV show, the girl would see him and find him. He successfully did, with the sacrifice of his brother. I am the brother in the script, and the story line was shown from they became homeless to how they went through all those struggles of life being starving, badly treated, kidnapped and so on. So although the whole story seems dark, but it is a comic ending. The hard parts of performance is still, the story line is too messy, for only 3 actors. It will be so hard for audiences to understand it, but we are trying, to make it better. I am Joseph, and I prove this message ))

About the final
We have been going through for a lot of projects and staging performance works this whole year, and we have finally finished the IB exam, which lasts us only one work before the last month of our school year, the final project. So this time our topic is free and open minded, that we can choose whatever we want as scenes and content. Any kinds of books (appropriated) are accepted. So this is a kind of good news, but also a bad news in some way for some certain kinds of people. For example, me. I have limited imagination and I really have a hard time to think about topics and ideas when it is open for us to find. So this is 12 o'clock in the "morning" of Monday, and I just came out of an idea. Although this idea is not quiet solid and completed, but I am still proud to say that it is from my true heart.
So the book that I want to choose is Persepolis. This is the book that we have learned last year, also from Ms. Guarino's class. That is the first book that I really liked and payed a lot of attention on reading it since I started to read English books. So that should be the top choice which gave me a a strong impression. Although I know that mostly the choice for staging should be more comedy like, or at least not a heavy topic in order to let classmates to come and participate. But this is the topic what I love to talk about, the unfortunate mixture of politic, time period, religion, and the chaos of homeland. That topic is heavier than everything that we can think of, but also that is really valuable to make literature product.
That book brings us back to the chaos of 1979 the Islamic revolution of Iran and how the author's life changed, as a participant, a watcher, and a 9 years old young girl who even did not quiet understand what have changed for her life, and homeland. 1870-1980 is the time period of chaos in worldwide, and people had to fight against the struggles from governments, or even stronger powers. And that is life. The whole book tells the story from when the riot against the Shah, the last dynasty of Iran, and then the Islamic revolution started, when the main character was a 9 years old girl, ends up f or her adventure in Europe which her parents sent her to there, Vienna of Austria. They were worried for her safety. The author is also the narrator, which makes this comic book more like an autobiography. The "camera" is always on the moments of life on Marja, the girl who suffered from life.
I believe that book is a wealthy choice with so many possibilities to stage for, although I do not have a clear idea for them.
In the end, I want to quote from her comments for the book.
"I know, when I choose to tell this story, I can not go back , forever. My homeland, Persepolis. The Mountain Alberz with shinning snow, and the smell of jasmine from my grandma.
However, I choose to tell you the story, from Persepolis of the Ancient Persian civilization, to the mysterious scarf of Iran in nowadays. I remember my grandma's words forever, "Do not forget where you are from. "
That is my pure childhood within the revolution, my vagrancy of my love in my youth.
This is my Iran, my homeland.
This is my Persepolis. "

Exam
Just couple days before, we had our biggest test all over the year, the final exam of IB. We had two papers, that includes the stuff that we have learned lately from the book The whale rider. The next part is about analysis of two poets and several of their poems that we can choose to mesmerize and analysis from them. For the "bigger" picture, the book of The Whale Rider is more question asked the analysis for staging much more than plot. That was the paper one and also, the second part of the name of our class, performance of "IB English Literature and Performance", which we have worked on a lot from the whole year. We did at the first the adaption of the script for Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare. Then we did the book of my love my love, which was the performance work for the IB. That was I had most improved for, performance, it also encourages me for doing drama as afternoon activities to gain experience and practice, participate in the world of performance. But writing and analysis are still my hard time of English, basically in any classes. This hurts my grade a lot, in any cases, even towards to my ACT exam. The analysis of poems are really hard to understand and take place for me to write them down, about the thoughts. I guess, the understanding is the biggest challenge for the way of learning English. It took me a lot of time to try to outline them into a specific, solid essay. I had the notes and prepare for the work of the exam, but when I get into the questions, I got really bad on it. I did not know how to clarify my mind. I guess, the best way to figure this out is only by practice, and more practise. This is the only way to figure out.

Nature is what we seeee
Natural is what we see. In Emily Dickinson's poems, a lot of them contains about natural. Due to her own experience, for example, she lives alone in a place which is far away from populations and communities. So she has a lot of chances to find the special meaning of nature to her, and take adventure for it. So this poem is about both in realistic that the beauty of natural, but also the metaphor from the the description of nature.
This is a short poem, with only a single stanza and 12 lines, with her unique settings of dashes and non title poem, but meaning instead of the size. She goes really straight to it to give us her definition of natural. " "Nature" is what we see—The Hill—the Afternoon— Nay—Nature is Heaven— Nature is what we hear— Nay—Nature is Harmony— Nature is what we know—Yet have no art to say—" Natural. From anything listed with time, (afternoon), metaphor (heaven), harmony (description). To be surprised, normally her poem has double meaning, one positive and one negative. But this time she wrote anthem for the natural, like worshipping the god. As a great poet, her poem in physical shaped well too. For example, the rhythm is really beautiful. For example, the ending of the lines are connected with words "see, eclipse, bee, sea , say , simplicity" with "c" sound. And nature (nay) with "heaven, hear, " and so on.

Analyzing the poem
The poem that I am choosing from the first line with "I dwell in Possibility - ", also as the title of the poem. This is the unique part of Emily Dickinson's poems, which she does not write the title for her poems, and to be respected, we do not use any adaptations, so directly we put the first line of the poem as the name. There are also something else that are famous for how unique they are from her poems. For example, the several " - " as the ending in her poems. Then the last thing which is quiet important to talk about, is the implications that she has in her poems. Just like a typical female, always has "words under words".
This is the topic of possibility, which is complicated and have so many changes itself already. For example, the line "A fairer House than Prose- More numerous of Windows - Superior - for Doors- " In any cases, windows and doors are the entrance for living things and air. Door is opened to outside, a brand new world waiting to explore, which means adventure and future - that is the representation of possibility, which is connected to the topic "possibility" itself. Window has the similar meaning. Because window is facing to the fresh air and the sky outside, every thing new comes from window - sounds, air , smells, even sometimes birds would fly to the window as a guest. For those we are not familiar with, or "opened" things are all considered as possibility in the poem from Emily Dickinson. And mostly she chooses to write in a quiet positive way.
She uses a lot of metaphors in her work, and mostly they are not so direct. For example, another metaphor for possibility is she used for roof and sky. They are connected really tightly. Roof is the way to reach sky, sky is what makes roof wonderful and attractive. And both of them as I mentioned, they all mean and related to the word possibility. In the end of the poem, she tells the positive meaning sneakily. "For occupation - This- The spreading wide my narrow Hands To gather Paradise - ". The destination, or definition of possibility towards to paradise.

Take me to broadway
This Wednesday, we went to a 10 hours long field trip to New York city to watch a play in broadway, and the theme of the play is the indicate of the curious dog. It was a book that we read long time ago, and I was surprised that it can be adapted by performance. As the time that we entered the theatre, it was really brand and good looking from the outside decorations. But the central part which those actors took place to perform look a little bit simple, or poor. That was the first impression for me to the theatre. But later on, when it uses the sound effects and light effects, I was amazed by how fancy and creative the technology using by it. Then when the actors directly opened the hided boxes under the floor, and when Christopher climbs on the wall, the train coming on the rail way, and train station and so on effects. Especially the digital projection, which is just mentioned in class how we can do it. This impresses me a lot. It is just like having a great meal, and the harvest is put by steps, from when I just sit in the theatre I did not feel anything special, but the feeling of admire increases by time. Since I started to do drama as afternoon activities, I started to know how to analysis or understand the staging and quality of practise of working in pairs. The only comment I have is they are professional. I do not really like that character Christopher, because of his behavior of being annoying, but I have to say that that leading actor is really good at it. The autism kid acting is really realistic. I think I have a lot of things to learn from them, in order to improve my performing skills.

Poems
1. The grandma in the traditional Arab village, is gathering grapes. It was represented by the scene of grandma working and granddaughter imaging aside, with the faithful connection of prayers. "I woke from the long fever to find them. "faith and life "
covering my head like cool prayers."
2. The grandma is talking about the things that are important in her life are gone that she's not surprised by anything now. Her passed away husband, and the coming death. "who fly from her like seeds into a deep sky. "
They will plant themselves. We will all die." "face to death"
3. In the family dad talked about the traditions of their nation Arab, about the religious connection of death and afterlife. "Once I said, “When we die, we give it back?”
He said that’s what a true Arab would say." "religious traditions"

2 Diorama
Since I have not chose any thing specific ideas for my scene, I will do the final scene of the adaptation just right now. Because the ending part is way more significant. The scene is about the part that Kahu finally became the whale rider with the whale, and leaving her tribe, and her family. Her grandfather, Koro the leader of the tribe with his wife say farewell to Kahu. The style of the staging is mostly sad, which shows how the old traditional grandpa feels sad and regrets for his thoughts of his awesome grand daughter. As in the pic, I will use digital projection with sea and beach as the background, and with grandparents on stage right, and Kahu with the whale (maybe she hangs a model of whale) on the stage right.
Whale rider live
As we had a long time period of our class over the whole year of working on "the second part of the class", performance, I guess I am more familiar with the word and everything behind that. We used basically one and half quarter of the year term to work on staging and adaptation from some novels. It is just like a progress of a production, and I am getting to it right now. Those IB course exams helped me a lot, although I am not a full IB student so that the grade of the exam is not that obviously important. Especially when my teacher commented after I finally finished my oral presentation with only 9 bullet points, that I have learned a lot. I agree with that totally with fully appreciation. So now I am here to talk about the possible / pretending that we may do an adaption of the novel The Whale Rider.
This is the novel which kind of truly represented the nowadays situation of Maori people, the natives around New Zealand. There is a word that was so obvious, and seem like a key word that we even have seen it in the test we had: Magical realism (Maybe those two words I am not 100 percent positively sure about it). The story that it tells is real and realistic in the same time, but with a kind of "magical production" within. For example, the conversation and the tale of whale and whale rider. In those stories that participates with gods and super nature, I call it "magical production". But the meaning and idea that the story teller wants to express is very realistic and clarified. This is the key work that we may work on. So I agree that the adaption can have a lot of wide ideas, and we do not have to settle them into an original staging. We can set the whole story into any time periods, with different groups / races of people, as long as we are connected with the connection between nature and humans, and tradition with humans are fine with it. I am sorry that I could not have a clear idea about the staging and story line for details, due to my poor imagination. But I have the outline about how the story would be like.
I think this topic of story is really brand with deep meaning, but also a common topic. We can separate the idea into two different ways, due to everyone's perceptive about what the most important information that the novel is trying to tell us. I will put the connection between human beings and nature, then the another one is the conflict between tradition and modern. (Obviously, this novel supports the part of protecting tradition the most.) But it also shows the "invasion" of modern life, for example when the Maori tribe leader "picked up the smart phone and call his son from South Island". This is what is interesting and comedic from the topic, but sad in the same time. This is the factor that we can comedic the staging and the adaption.

Once, on this Island
Last Sunday, I went to the black box to watch our last winter musical - once on this island. It is already the third and the last day, but it is still that popular and busy around. All the seats are full to sit down. This is the first play that I can finally understand well and track on what is going on like most of the scenes. I am not that surprised about that because I actually have just read the original book and also actually did direct with one partner to make one performance based on the story as an adaptation. So I felt really confident to watch and glad about my first time full journey to the play.
Although I do not quiet know about the performance area, but I guess I will make some comments based on my guess. This is a kind of musical, which is just like a well staged opera. So full and all through the play, those actors are singing all the time. Their singing skills are so good - I was amazed that so many people can sing that well in this world around me. With in the time, the back ground music was participating so professionally. As the first time I heard it, I thought someone in the back stage were playing the downloaded music from internet or somewhere. But after a little bit I found out that some unique instrument that has a longer tone than it should be, then I finally realized that people are playing it! I was so surprised. This is also a challenge for me to go and choose drama as my spring sport I guess. Because both of the cru members and the actors are so professional. A person without any, any of the acting skills like me, I do not know if that is a good choice for me to go right now.
The story was beautiful, and the staging and set ups were funny too. The scene with Webkha (I do not know if I did spell it right) standing up stairs on stage as dressed as a professor, with other actors hang their hand drew pics to describe the history of beauhommes family was really fresh. The four gods, Erzulie, Agwe, Papage and Asaka on the four corners of the stage were perfectly fit in the performance. I do not know why, but when I did actually try to find out if the actors did not fit in their characters, I felt I can find nothing about it. The customs and pops are just perfectly fit too. (Sorry but I do not have any more ways to describe, that was just an amazing and perfect creature!) The play also reminded me a lot and gave me ideas to rethink about the structure of my own performance for the IB exam. I wish I could be like them and have the creative thoughts come out. And last of all, their performance skills are the best present if I can actually learn it.

Oral presentation text (partial)
Hello everyone I want to talk about our IB course work, the adaptation of my love my love. We choose our play from a non popular part from the book, which not every one can guess what our characters are. We are the butterflies, who watch for Desiree's life, from the beginning to the end when she died, and brought all of her desire. Our lines are all around desiree's stories. So we decided to separate the play into two different staging. We originally planned that we design the plot as butterflies, talking about the story of Ti Moune through the whole play. We have the first one is about staging about narration. Then when we have to exactly show the story, we act it out, and try to show them with you.
From the play as you can see, the style of the play is mostly funny , from the beginning part to the middle part, but the funny atmosphere ended in the middle of the play. We separate the whole performance basically into three scenes. First one is when Desiree was still a pure girl from the small village on the island, her smooth life has been changed until one day, she eventually met Daniel. The second scene is when Desiree met Daniel again, she fell in love with him deeply, so we had a dancing scene which show how romantic it is. Then the last scene about how and why Desiree got threw out of Daniel's house. This is the sad part, which is the also the end of the story. The audiences, and especially I hope you can feel, and take their steps on Desiree's journey, and understand her life. Different people have different perspectives, so they may have different ways to understand Desiree. Some of them think Desiree is the representative for desire brings people down into darkness, and her name is just a sign. Some people think she is just a pure girl, went a road that does not belong to herself. Just like in the book, "The fish trying to swim on the land". This is kind of the way that we want to show our audiences. Desiree is just a pure girl, but with a strong heart to chase her dreams, and a tragic life for her.
In the performance, I guess the most outstanding detail was both of us, the actors wore a pair of butterfly wings. This is the way how we show the separation of the different part of our scenes, the "butterflies' talkshow" and the reality. As you can see, there are uncountable times of black out and the scenes changing happened. So this is the way to tell the audiences when and who we were, in different scenes. Some times I was still the butterfly who witness besides, but the girl was in the reality acting Desiree. There are differences between the color of the wings and our customs between each other. I am in all black, from customs to the wings. This represents that I am always the same - never changed , represents the insistence of Desiree's characteristics. this was also mentioned in the scripts too.But my partner is different. She has a pair of white butterfly wings, and several different customs - kind of hard for her to change them through all the time. She has so many different kinds of styles, not only because the requirement of the play, but she represents the changing part of Desiree's characteristics.

Blog 15 : Our performance
I think our group is making a creative interpretation. Well, not only me think in this kind of way, every one who have watched the play is having the same idea as me. Maybe it is not the best one, but it is really creative, and it is fresh for audiences to taste such a kind of performance. We choose our play from a non popular part from the book, which not every one can guess what our characters are. We are the butterflies, who watch for Desiree's life, from the beginning to the end when she died, and brought all of her desire. Our lines are all around desiree's stories. For the performance part, which I think is the most difficult part in the class and also the project. I did not have any experiences for staging before, so I do not know which kind of way is natural (!) emotion, body language, action and movement etc. I truly have a time in this. So from the rehearsals, when I stood on the stage, not being nervous but I feel like I do not feel comfortable to be natural as myself. But this one can be fixed by gaining more and more experiences. I think the good part that I have achieved which is the expression of emotions. I feel like just right after I understand the story line and the meaning of the script, then I can express it out, with voice and body languages, this is also what my teacher found out when she wrote comment for our rehearsal.

Blog 14: our hard time
This is my second group work about theatre performance, and also the first one with requirement of recording our drama. For everyone who needed to perform for ,on average, 5 minutes, I do have a group with only two people, that is, me and sofia. So as we are doing a ten minutes play, it is so much easier than other groups since that I've known the plot in my class, for example the 20 minutes short movie group. Just like my last IB exam work, I am lucky enough to have so many good ideas that leads to a lot of funny effects. This time, fortunately, my partner is also very talented. She has so many good ideas that come out with in the script, and the experiences with staging. Me, as a beginner, I must admit that I am taking the advantage.
Our play is a little bit complicated. Due to the situation that with only two people in the play, we have to think about a starting with a different topic, or a form of script in order to make the play itself more interesting. So we decided to separate the play into two different staging. We originally planned that we design the plot as butterflies, talking about the story of Ti Moune though the whole play. So we have first staging about narration. Then when we have to exactly show the story, we will act it out. For example the dancing scene about Daniel and Desiree is for both of us. Then the whole scene is divided into three parts, which are the changes through Desiree's life. When she was pure, when she had more eager and then fell into darkness in the end. So the custom of our actors are different. She acts for the different changes for Desiree with different colors of dresses, but I don't change the color because I represent the pureness of her.
I would like to talk about the feeling when we tried our rehearsal as first time. Before that , I thought our script and staging are perfect to act, but when we actually mesmerize the lines and we go in to the black box and try out, I realized some problems that exist in our performance. For example, because we have lot of scenes changing in ten minutes. So our scripts seem like have a hard time on changing. It is too sudden to show the transformation of staging. This is one of the most serious problems that we have right now. So it is pretty urgent to face this problem.
Another one is about the facial expression ( the vocab in theatre theology), the expression of emotion. In total, we have four characters. And they are all different from each others on characteristics. For example, there are different emotions for Desiree each scene. They are pure and boring, fall in love with her whole heart, then the last one is when she depressed and desperate about her relationship with Daniel crashed.
